Este artículo no pretende ser un ensayo sobre el cine gay, ni un análisis psicológico o sociológico sobre la problemática homosexual. Tan sólo una recopilación descriptiva de aquellos films que inciden sobre el tema con una dosis de creatividad y calidad estética.

Con respecto al cine sobre la homosexualidad femenina, creo que sus características particulares, merece un artículo independiente.

Relacionar la homosexualidad y el cine, o sea las historias que éste ha representado en torno a las relaciones amorosas entre personas del mismo sexo, ha pasado a ser después de un siglo de historia, un clásico del "séptimo arte". Un buen número de directores así lo demuestra: Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Rainer Werner Fassbinder,Derek Jarman, Pedro Almodóvar, nombres entre muchos otros, que no ofrecen ninguna duda en cuanto a la calidad de sus discursos visuales, y que no sólo han creado ficciones emblemáticas, sino que han profundizado la problemática de la homosexualidad desde múltiples perspectivas. Ante tal propuesta, surge una pregunta obligada:

¿Existe un género cinematográfico (como lo son el policial, el western, la ciencia ficción), que se pueda denominar "gay"?.

Muchos estudiosos o críticos contestarían rápidamente con un rotundo no. Pero lo que parece evidente después de un siglo de cine, es que sí existe un gran número de films que han elegido como núcleo central de la trama el tema de la homosexualidad, y que además dan cuenta para un mayor conocimiento de las "estrechas relaciones" que siempre han unido el cine y la homosexualidad. Y acercarse a la homosexualidad, a través del cine es, cuanto menos, un interesante atrevimiento. Si nos "introducimos" en el cine gay, nos encontraremos con la primer sorpresa: una de las más variadas, sugerentes y ricas filmografías que existen.

Del drama a la comedia, de la tragedia al policial, de la obra de arte y la biografía a la historia del poder y la denuncia social. De autores noveles y vanguardistas, clásicos y "grandes" directores. Un recorrido laberíntico por historias apasionantes, formas de narrar y maneras diferentes de contemplar el ejercicio de una mirada tolerante y de respeto hacia otras elecciones sexuales y culturales.

El cine entendido como gay comprendería todos aquellos films cuyo argumento principal, cuya trama central, se basa en una historia - en el entorno y de la clase que sea - vivida por homosexuales, y en la que la homosexualidad sea la razón fundamental de las vivencias, actitudes y reacciones de los personajes del film.

Muchos otros films, no considerados dentro de este "género gay", serían todos aquellos en los que aparece algún elemento homosexual, pero como una subtrama del film. En estos largometrajes , la homosexualidad funciona como complemento del desarrollo del guión, a veces muy importante, pero nunca determinante. Como ocurre en muchos films cuyo argumento se desarrolla en prisiones: El expreso de medianoche, La celda de cristal, Jungla de cemento. O los que se refieren a formas de vida colectivas o comunidades como cuarteles, conventos o campos de concentración, frecuentemente relacionados con el nazismo: La cruz de hierro, o la insuperable La caída de los dioses, de L.Visconti, retrato histórico de la "noche de los cuchillos largos", y donde en medio de una orgía homosexual, el actor Helmut Berger aparece trasvestido al estilo Marlene Dietrich en El ángel azul. El mismo actor que en otro film del propio Visconti dio vida al legendario monarca homosexual Luis II de Baviera, llamado Ludwing, "el rey loco". En el mismo marco de la alemania nazi, se encuadra el film Cabaret de Bob Fosse, que muestra la pasión del noble Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) por Brian Roberts (Michael York).

Establecer cual fue el primer film gay de la Historia del Cine es difícil, ya que muchos films, por cuestiones de censura pasaron a formar parte de circuitos de exhibición clandestinos, incluso algunos abiertamente pornográficos, al igual que otros de contenido erótico heterosexual. Sin embargo, se pueden citar como los más antiguos films gay: Lot in Sodom,de Webber y Watson del año 1933, y eliminada de los circuitos comerciales. La otra que corrió la misma suerte data del año 1928: La caja de Pandora, de G.W. Pabst. Otro film temprano que hace referencia, en este caso a la homosexualidad latente en un colegio de niños, fue Cero en conducta, que Jean Vigo filmó en 1933. También podemos citar como antecedentes del cine gay, Ivan el Terrible (1945) y Octubre del genial Eisenstein, aunque los elementos homosexuales de los personajes son expuestos sutilmente.

En la década del cincuenta, Jean Genet, "Saint-Genet", al decir de Sartre, realizó el arquetípico mediometraje gay: Un chant d´amour, el más famoso de la Historia del Cine Europeo. Es el único film rodado por J.Genet, que plasma todo el mundo carcelario que formó parte de su propia vida. Naturalmente, y como cabía esperar, el film fue censurado.

En 1954, H.Langlois hizo la primera exhibición pública en la Cinemateca Francesa. Pero a pesar del apoyo de la institución, el film sufrió las iras de la censura, y no fue fácil poder ver el film en Francia a lo largo de los veinte años siguientes a su primera muestra. Una historia de 25 minutos de amor sin palabras y entre rejas. Un mundo que perteneció por derecho propio al autor de Querelle de Brest, llevado al cine por el director alemán R.Fassbinder en 1982.

En la década de los sesenta ya se comienza a tocar con un mayor grado de permisividad el tema de la homosexualidad en el cine. Basil Dearden dirigió en 1961 Víctima, en la que D. Bogarde protagonizaba a un hombre que, a pesar de amar a su esposa, sentía una pasión incontrolable por un joven. Tema que se repite en Tempestad sobre Washington (1961) de O.Preminger, o Reflejos en un ojo dorado (1967), de J.Huston, basado en la novela homónima de Carson McCullers, con E.Taylor y Marlon Brando en el papel de un oficial homosexual de la armada. El film fue condenado por la National Catholic Office for Motion Pictures, además de las fuertes críticas que Brando recibió por su interpretación a la que algunos calificaron de patética.

En 1968 se estrena Teorema de Pier Paolo Pasolini, y hablar de este film prohibido durante mucho tiempo en la argentina, es hablar de un universo que llevó a la homosexualidad a la categoría de lucha política. El mismo Pasolini había concebido el fim como "una historia religiosa: un dios que llega a una familia burguesa; bello, joven, fascinante, angel y/o demonio. Ama a todos, desde el padre (originalmente O.Welles), hasta la criada(Laura Betti)". Terece Stamp, fue el "dios" elegido.

Curiosamente, más de veinte años después, el actor británico interpretará un excelente papel de travestido, pleno de dignidad, en Las aventuras de Priscilla, reina del desierto, de Stephan Elliot. Donde se trataba de contar una historia de personajes que se encuentran, a menudo, por su condición de homosexuales,en situaciones adversas, duras, y por ello se eligieron lugares y paisajes áridos y desérticos. Donde un hombre con ropas de mujer era algo nunca visto.

En lo que respecta al cine de Pasolini, cabría recordar que el tema de la homosexualidad, es determinante, ya que aparece unido a las dos utopías que marcan el devenir temporal del artista, y a la vez intentan detenerlo. Entre CUERPO E HISTORIA, y el abismo abierto entre ellos, se mueven estas dos utopías: la del cuerpo está ligada a la fiesta dionisíaca en el exceso y e l"caos" de los sentidos que marca el rito: el tiempo de lo sagrado y de la repetición. Desbordarse es perder los límites del propio cuerpo para repetirse en el engendramiento gemelar del cuerpo de los muchachos. Utopía del cuerpo que estalla en el desborde de la pasión por los sentidos, y el placer estético encadenado al placer erótico.

Y por otro lado la utopía de la historia, de la revolución, que la conciencia histórica, "el deber marxista" debiera inscribir en el tiempo del progreso hacia la revolución. En la poesía como en el cine de Pasolini el punto de reunión para ambas utopías es el cuerpo de los muchachos pobres, del suburbio de Roma: la homosexualidad de Pasolini unida al cuerpo del sub-proletariado italiano, primero, y del tercer mundo (Africa) después. La homosexualidad en el cine de Pasolini (El chiquero, Teorema, Las mil y una noches) está vinculado a un ideal de sexualidad nómada, itinerante, opuesto al de la norma burguesa de la reproducción familiar.

En este sentido, Pasolini ha transformado su homosexualidad en un arma para la lucha política. La homosexualidad, entonces, es un viaje infinito: en el rito de la repetición, el cuerpo se amplía, y es de todos y es de nadie, aparece y desaparece como una forma que cambia y permanece; allí también el mismo cuerpo de Pasolini se ofrece en el rito al tiempo sagrado del sacrificio (el de su propia muerte en manos de esos mismos muchachos). Porque la escena del encuentro homosexual en Pasolini, está siempre de alguna manera marcada por la violencia y la muerte.

Fuera de las relaciones familiares (burguesas) irreversibles, el cuerpo de los muchachos, son una forma de detener el tiempo, o sea de ordenar el caos. De la "trilogía de la vida" (El Decamerón - Los cuentos de Canterbury - Las mil y una noches), de la celebración del sexo pánico, de la inocencia, de la fuerza liberadora y transgresora de cierta pureza elemental vinculada al mito, a la negra razón del humillado, a la calculada obra del mal en Saló. Del esplendor de los cuerpos a las víctimas de una violencia ajena: la pasión erótica transformada en un instrumento de dominio. La homosexualidad degenera en sodomía; el sexo vital se vuelve culpa o castigo, y el amor, odio. De ahí la opinión de Franco Cordelli: "Pasolini se sirvió de Sade para enmascarar a Pasolini". Enmascaramiento, basado en el vínculo de fascismo y sadismo como alegorías del poder.

Otro de los directores de cine que se ha interesado por analizar la homosexualidad es el controvertido Ken Russell, solo hay que recordar la escena de lucha, de un alto contenido erótico, de Mujeres enamoradas (1969), donde Alan Bates y Oliver Reed se baten cuerpo a cuerpo. Russell ha tocado la homosexualidad desde el punto de vista de personajes históricos, por ejemplo en Pasión de vivir (1971), sobre la vida de Tchaikovsky. Imposible no acordarse de uno de los largometrajes más conocidos en el que el tema de la homosexualidad se ha puesto de manifiesto bajo la dirección de un cineasta "gay" rodeado de clasicismo y cultura. Basado en la novela de Thomas Mann, Muerte en Venecia, L. Visconti recrea la pasión de otro compositor musical - Mahler en este caso - por un adolescente de catorce años llamado Tadzio.

En 1969, vieron la luz El conformista, de B. Bertolucci, un excelente film en el que se cruzan dos de los temas centrales del director: política y sexo. La manifiesta homosexualidad del protagonista (J.L.Trintignant) ha de ser reprimida para mostrar a la sociedad su "normalidad". Para ello contrae matrimonio con una dulce mujer, y se afilia al partido fascista. Basada en una novela de A. Moravia, el film trata no tanto de una reconstrucción de la italia fascista de 1938, como de una mirada introspectiva de la tragedia de un hombre que reniega de su homosexualidad. Los paralelismos entre la decadencia del sistema fascista y la decadencia del personaje quedan expuestos con claridad. El otro film es el Satyricón, donde Fellini intenta la reconstrucción de la decadencia del Imperio Romano.

En 1976 se estrena uno de los films más abiertamente gays de la Historia del Cine: Sebastiane, íntimamente relacionado con el acápite con que abre el artículo, de Derek Jarman, auténtico cineasta de culto gay. También director de las clásicas Caravaggio (1986) y Eduardo II (1991). En las que su primera y más clara denuncia es la hipocresía de la sociedad ante la homosexualidad y, ante toda clase de intolerancia. Las conexiones entre el poder y el sexo, y el rescate de la amistad llevada a límites inquietantes, parecen ser las preocupaciones fundamentales de este convencido militante gay muy influenciado por Jean Cocteau. Los años ochenta fueron una explosión de films donde la homosexualidad es el tema central y determinante: El ansia, de Tony Scott, La jaula de las locas, Trilogía de N. York, de P.Bogart, El beso de la mujer araña, de H.Babenco, Otra historia de amor, de Américo Ortiz de Zárate. Es de destacar el policial de W. Friedkin, Cruising, donde el polícía, interpretado por Al Pacino, comienza su particular búsqueda a la "caza" del asesino de homosexuales. Finalmente, descubrirá no sólo al asesino, sino su propia sexualidad.

Dentro del cine español y relacionadas con "la movida madrileña" se estrenarán, Un hombre llamado Flor de Otoño,de Pedro Olea, La muerte de Mikel, de I. Uribe y casi todo el cine de Pedro Almodóvar, en especial la tan celebrada La ley del deseo (1987), que mantiene el tema gay en el candelero, hasta llegar a analizarlo desde la perspectiva más puramente "almodovariana": mezcla de parodia, pastiche, el comic y la reminiscencia a retazos de los géneros del viejo Hollywood.

En los noventa, nos encontramos con un nuevo factor que se incluye en el cine gay: el sida. A partir del descubrimiento de esta enfermedad, el cine se hizo eco del problema, aunque en muchas ocasiones, en especial Hollywood, ha sido tratado superficialmente y como un elemento comercial más para la posterior y mejor venta del film. En cualquier caso, hay que hacer referencia a algunos films como Compañeros inseparables, de Norman René; Miradas en la despedida, de B.Sherwood; Los amigos de Peter, de K.Branagh; y la tan laureada Philadelphia, de J. Demme. De las últimas, y como aproximacíón indirecta a la homosexualidad, también hay que mencionar Carrington (1995), de C. Hampton, con un excelente J. Pryce en el papel del escritor gay L. Strachey, y Emma Thompson.

Pero sin lugar a dudas, el más emblemático de los films gay, es QUERELLE (1982), el último y póstumo film de uno de los cineastas alemanes más experimentales y provocadores de la década de los sesenta. Compañero junto a Herzog y Wenders de lo que se denominó la joven generación alemana, Fassbinder realizó este film basándose en una obra, Querelle de Brest, de Jean Genet, uno de los autores más significativos de la literatura y del cine gay. Homosexual de clara tendencia reivindicativa, Faasbinder posee una compleja filmografía en la que siempre aparece como elemento esencial el sexo, y las reivindicaciones sociales o raciales. Querelle, es el espejo de su personalidad.

Por un lado, marca el culto de sí mismo - expresado en caracteres masculinos y femeninos - que se apoderó de Fassbinder a medida que avanzaba en su tiempo de creación. Por otro lado, el espejo demarca la distanciada exposición de esa condición: entre él y la realidad representada se erige la "representación" como cualidad intrínseca pero visible del objeto. En el film, el mundo homosexual trasciende resquebrajado y multiplicado por el exceso y la dislocación. Refleja también, una atmósfera que camina entre lo sórdido y lo onírico, un buceo hacia los deseos más recónditos del sexo, allá donde se une el placer puro con el placer por la posesión. El protagonista Brad Davis, descarnado se enfrenta a su propio destino y comienza a reconocer su condición de homosexual tras ser forzado.

Paralelamente films como Tacones lejanos, de Almodovar; Orlando, de S.Potter; M.Butterfly, de Cronenberg; Adiós a mi concubina, de C. Kaige, El juego de las lágrimas, de N.Jordan y Ed Wood, reflexionan, no ya sobre la homosexualidad masculina sino sobre el lado femenino de la masculinidad.

Esta apretada, pero significativa lista de films, catalogados como "género gay", estaría planteando de forma inequívoca que la esencia del amor, es independiente del sexo de cada ser humano. Y que tanto hombres como mujeres, sean homosexuales o heterosexuales, son igual de vulnerables frente al poder.
